Advanced Prostate Cancer

Although his surgical practice is focused on men with localised prostate cancer, Declan has a very strong interest and expertise in managing men with advanced prostate cancer.

Advanced prostate cancer remains a major problem for many

Unfortunately, although the vast majority of men diagnosed with prostate cancer are diagnosed at an early stage, it is a sad fact that prostate cancer still kills about 3,500 men in Australia every year. Some of these are men who have advanced (“metastatic”) cancer at the time of their diagnosis, while others are men who developed recurrent cancer having had surgery or radiotherapy in the past.

Declan leads the internationally renowned multidisciplinary GU Oncology team at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and is involved in many trials of new therapies to improve the lives of men with advanced prostate cancer. He publishes many papers focussing on the management of men with advanced prostate cancer, and sees many patients for second opinions regarding management of their advanced prostate cancer.

Declan is an expert in the use of PSMA PET/CT to accurately define the extent of prostate cancer and has many publications in this area.

The World’s Leading Experts

Declan is an invited member of the Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference, a bi-annual gathering of the world’s leading prostate cancer experts. In August 2019 the panel met in Basel for two days of state-of-the-art addresses covering every aspect of advanced prostate cancer.

European Urology publication

The panel also produces a consensus paper, published in European Urology, on how to manage patients with advanced prostate cancer, focussing on the hottest topics in advanced prostate cancer. This highly-cited paper is updated by the expert panel every two years.
